UPSC / IAS prelims 2018 - Preparation strategy: Environmental Ecology, Biodiversity and climate change


Environmental ecology, biodiversity and climate change is added to the syllabus of G.S paper I of prelims examination in 2011.

If you analyse the trend of past five years, 10 to 15 questions are being asked from this part of the syllabus.


SOURCES OF PREPARATION:



1.           NCERT books of general science and geography (covers some key concepts related to this part).
2.           Indian Year Book 2017/ 2018 - chapter on Environment
3.           Economic survey 2017 -18: Key points compilations of climate change and Environment related issues
4.           Budget 2018-19 allocations to Environment ministry
5.           Regular updates from Ministry of Environment, forests and climate change website
6.           Chapter 4, 5 & 7 from 12th five year plan Volume I
7.           Press Information bureau features related to environment
8.           Press Information Releases of Ministry of Environment, Forests and climate change (monthly releases).
9.           News and editorials related to Environment part from newspapers.

HOW TO PREPARE:

First read the questions related to environment, biodiversity, climate change from the previous questions papers. It will make you understand the standard and pattern of questions asking.


Start your preparation with fundamentals or basics given in NCERT / NIOS / CBSE books.

Once you complete the basics go for sources mentioned above.

While reading from the above sources you will come across various terms, issues, institutes, organisations, treaties, conferences, publication reports etc related to Environment.

For example if you come across a news item – “ Twenty Third (23rd) conference of parties (COP – 23) to the United Nations Framework convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) being held at the Bonn, Germany from November 6 – 17, 2017

From this new item, you have to collect points regarding
Conference of Parties (cop) and UNFCCC.


In this way you have to learn concepts, terms, issues related to the syllabus.
