Study plan for SSC - CGL exam English section Tier I and Tier II

Hi Aspirants

English section is very important for SSC CGL examination as it is for 250 marks in total (50 marks in tier 1 and 200 marks in Tier II).
Both in tier I and II this section consists questions on
  1. Sentence arrangement
  2. Finding error in the given statements
  3. comprehension passages
  4. voice and speech
  5. Finding wrongly spelt word
  6. Fill in the blanks
  7. Idioms and Phrases
  8. Synonyms
  9. Antonyms
  10. one word substitution
This section is a cake walk for some and for others it could be a nightmare. Whether you feel it easy or tough you have to face this section in examination. This section is one where you can score maximum marks if you have good command over language. But for those who feel this section tough need not worry. We are here to help you. There are many friends and other aspirants who are ready to help you.

Preparation strategy:
1. Collect previous year papers of tier I. Collect 5 papers of such. Go through each question given in those papers. Answer them. No need to bother about time. Check your answers with key and find out how many marks you scored. Even if you get 5 marks out of 50, no need to panic. Because you still got lot of time to prepare and if you utilise that time properly you can improve your score by other 15 to 20 marks easily.

2. Collect editorial pages of The Hindu/ Times of India/ Indian express or any other good english newspaper. Read 2 to 4 editorials daily. After reading each editorial try to write summary of the editorial you read. As you do this daily it helps you in reading comprehension passages and answering questions based on comprehension passages.

3. While reading editorials you will come across many new words. Make note of those words. Find synonyms and antonyms of those words. Maintain a notes for it.

4. Read any good grammar book.Understand tense, active and passive voice, direct and indirect speech, prepositions. Watch videos on english grammar in youtube.

5. Whenever you find any old or previous papers of any examination related to banking, management entrance, insurance, etc make note of words given in those papers.Find synonyms and antonyms.

6. If you have any good book for english competitve exams. Read idioms and phrases given in those books.

Never have a mind set that I can score more than 25 marks easily out of 50 in this section or I cannot score more than 10 marks in this section. Your mindset should always be on how to improve your score. Then only you can learn new words, new idioms, new grammar rules daily.

There is no one complete book for the preparation of English section. You should be open to learn from different sources. Even while watching cricket you can listen to commentary and can learn new words. While watching news or discussions in TV, you can make note of unknown words and later you can find out meaning of those words.
We suggest you to be in learning mode always. When you are in learning mode you always find different sources to learn new things.
