Indian Administrative Service is
considered as the Premier Service of Government of India.
Direct recruitment is done through
Civil services exam conducted by UPSC.
IAS officers are imparted
probationary training at Lal Bahadur Shastri National Academy of Administration
(LBSNAA).
IAS officer is responsible for
maintenance of law and order, revenue administration and general administration
in the area under him/her.
IAS officer initially works in the
state cadre as Sub Divisional Magistrate /Joint collector. Later on promotion
he/she will become District Magistrate/ District Collector / Deputy Commissioner.
An IAS officer can be appointed in
the autonomous Organizations/ Public sector units / UN organizations and other
International Organizations in various capacities.
An IAS officer can also serve as
personal secretary to Ministers in central government.

In the career span of an IAS
officer he/she will definitely raise up to Additional Secretary to GOI /
Principal Secretary in State Government.
Those officers who got recruited
at an early age will raise to position of Secretary to GOI and cabinet
secretary.
An IAS officer can also avail two
year study leave to enhance his academic qualification & Skills.
